Thank you for this, Mahesh.
I have a question.
You mention that we are to submit “at least “ three chapters.
Is the required number of chapters going to be uniform for everyone or is it left to individual choice?
How many maximum chapters is one allowed to send?
Thank you
Warm regards

Thank you very much for the feedback. It was helpful to read someone else's view, and look at the book differently.

Regarding Juror 2's query on whether there would be more past the synopsis's ending, I have been writing out a series on my blog (View from the top of the tank, from episode 69) and passing them out to friends and family. I had hoped the story would end where the synopsis ended but have written more episodes since and was thinking it might fit into a second book.

A short story (unrelated to this story) was shortlisted in the Bengaluru Review in 2020, but no longer appears on the web. I have written a few romance novels, but have been unable to publish them -- hence my interest in the Book Challenge.

I write short stories revolving around a Mumbai divorcée in Fishy Chronicles 1-68. I'm sharing a link of my blog (www.viewfromthetopofthetank.blogspot.com), and another of episode 69 (https://viewfromthetopofthetank.blogspot.com/2020/07/fishy-chronicles-69-lockdown-diaries.html ).

Thank you for your time and patience. It is much appreciated.

Warm regards,
Anna
Thanks for the feedback and the score / ratings for my Synopsis submission!

Thanks for the feedback Mahesh. Will be in touch. Curious about one thing. The person who polled 1st(don't need to know his name). What was his/her cumulative score?

That is just to understand what one needs to do to bridge the gap.

Best,

Julian

Julian, there was no cumulative score per se in selection as it involved two different aspects - jury score across three parameters and saleability of the idea. The high score across each parameter is that of one or more entrants, and is a better yardstick to bridge the gap.

In your particular case, you scored quite high on coherence and clarity and fell short on building a compelling (book) narrative. On the saleability of the idea, the general consensus was that the synopsis fits into a collection of short stories format, which is a very difficult space to get published due to the high supply.

Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the clarifications Mahesh. Great insights into your evaluation process.
Perhaps what I will add in next time is a story bible kind of format that fleshes out character arcs etc.

Best

Julian

I will keep adding synopsis documents as I receive them, and rotate between you all. Please keep track of the following –

  1. Evaluation score on three Cs – Clairty, Coherence, Compelling writing (on scale of 1 to 5, 5 being very high)
  2. Feedback to share with the applicant (150 words at least)

I will reach out on the 7th to collate this information, and periodically after. After deadline, we can connect for a one-hour session to just go through the scores and feedback (tentatively 13th, Sunday, 5pm). Also plan to send reminders from the 5th onwards.
